Prohout

Prohout “Garcinia vilersiana” is the kind of tree that grows in the forest or mountain. We use prohout bark to get yellow. We need to chop the tree bark to be small pieces and boil them to get the color. It spends around one hour to boil the bark to get dyeing water. The dark or light yellow is depended on the amount of tree bark that we boil to get the color.

 

Pidan – Ships cloth with the pairs of Nagas

Pidan “Pictorial ikat cloth” was made from natural dyeing of indigo and tree bark of Garcinia vilersiana. The cloth was designed by  hand and handwoven to show ship “Sampov” with the pair of nagas, animal and nature to decorate the ship to upgrade the beauty of the whole design. A weaver spent around two months to design the pattern and one month to weave the pattern as pictorial ikat cloth.

 

 

Annatto Seed

It is the kind of tree is grown near home or other areas to get seed for different purposes of cooking and dyeing materials. Weaver uses annatto seed to dye orange color on silk and cotton yarns.

 

 

Pidan Displayed in Pagoda

Pidan is a traditional pictorial ikat cloth that Cambodian people produce it to donate to the monk in Pagoda. Most pidans were designed as a part of Buddhist story, previous lives of Buddha and a selected set of main story in the last of Buddhist life. Some pidans had the name of people in the border of pidan cloth.

Ang Andeth Pagoda is the very old pagoda and was repaired to keep the traditional belief that people used to donate pidan to display in the pagoda. The Pagoda located in Tangyab commune, Prey Kabas district and the East of Chiso Mountant.

Many pidan patterns were displayed under the roof of temple in Ang Andeth Pagoda. After Pol Pot regimes, many pidan clothes were damaged and destroyed.

Now there are some pidan clothes are displayed in the temple to show the traditional weaving pictorial ikat cloth for Khmer people to preserve the beautiful cloth of complex weaving work. It showed the patient work of weaver to overtake the very hard work in designing, dyeing and weaving to get a piece of cloth.

Manila Tamarind

Manila Tamarind is a kind of tree that its trunk is spiny and has a single pair of leaves. This tree has fruits that we can eat it. In dyeing way, we use bark of tree to produce the color of light pink. After we cut the tree bark, we need to chop it to small piece and put in the water to boil it to get the color. In general, amount of tree bark can produce different colors. It means that if we want to dye  darker color we need more tamarind bark for dyeing.
